The Account Director is a dual-focused role that balances high-level client relationship management and business growth with hands-on team collaboration and project strategy. They are responsible for managing a book of business and serve as the primary link between the client and the internal creative and media teams, ensuring campaigns are delivered on time, within budget, and meet strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Client Relationship Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients, building trusted, long-term relationships and setting clear expectations. They communicate campaign progress, address concerns, and ensure client satisfaction. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the marketing strategy team on the development and implementation of overarching account strategies that align with the client’s business objectives. This includes interrogating client briefs, providing strategic input, and representing the client’s interests during creative brainstorming sessions.
- Leadership and Mentoring: Supervise, motivate, and mentor account coordinators as needed to help foster a collaborative work environment. Delegate tasks, provide constructive feedback, and support professional development as appropriate.
- Project Oversight: Oversee the entire lifecycle of multiple advertising and marketing campaigns, from conception to final execution. This involves coordinating cross-functional teams (creative, digital, media, etc.) and ensuring all project components are produced accurately and on schedule.
- Financial Accountability and Growth: Manage account profitability, track budgets, review billing and invoicing, and negotiate contracts and fees with clients. A key function is identifying and pursuing new business opportunities and organic growth within existing accounts.
- Reporting and Analysis: Leverage data and analytics to monitor campaign performance against KPIs and present clear, concise reports and actionable recommendations to clients and agency leadership.
Skills and Qualifications
- Knowledge: A solid understanding of the industry including branding, digital and traditional marketing, advertising, web development, and social media.
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication abilities for clear and professional interaction with team members, clients, and vendors.
- Soft Skills: Strong people skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence; comfortable addressing and resolving conflict.
- Leadership: Strong leadership and team management capabilities. Possesses the ability to lead meetings, guide conversations, and assert appropriately when needed.
- Organizational and Time Management Skills: The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively, and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Must be comfortable managing change and client priorities.
- Problem-Solving Abilities: The capacity to identify potential roadblocks and proactively communicate solutions to the team for prompt resolution. Ability to resolve conflicts like miscommunication, disagreements, expectations, agreements, and accountability in a healthy, constructive manner.
- Proficiency in Software: Familiarity with project management tools, digital dashboards and reporting tools, and Google Workspace/Microsoft Office.
Education and Experience
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in marketing, advertising, communications, or a related field is required.
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience in an agency environment successfully serving in roles such as account manager or account executive.
