It was the perfect start to a candid conversation about the pressures of creating content in a world that never stops. Brittany’s approach is all about working smarter, not harder, and we left with a playbook of practical, easy-to-implement strategies. For those who couldn’t make it, here’s a look at the key takeaways from our discussion.
The “Why”—Getting Real About Burnout
Brittany got the conversation rolling by asking us to put it all on the table: Why do we get burned out? The answers came fast, and they were all relatable.
- The Blank Page Paralysis: The group agreed that one of the hardest parts is simply “to stare at a blank page.” Getting started is half the battle.
- The Time Crunch: As many attendees noted, there’s never enough time. Small teams and solopreneurs have to prioritize the work that pays the bills.
- Constant Change: It feels impossible to keep up when the algorithms are always changing.
- Content Overload: It’s hard to feel motivated when you’re competing with low-value posts about things like “National Coffee Mug Day.”
Flipping the Script: Finding Your “Unfair Advantage”
After laying out the challenges, we flipped the script by focusing on what Brittany calls the “unfair advantages” of being a small business. Instead of trying to mimic big brands, we should lean into what makes us different.
- Authenticity Wins: A behind-the-scenes video or a quick photo from the founder has way more traction than a pristine corporate graphic. It feels real, and it’s a level of connection “that only a small business can get away with”.
- You’re More Agile: Small businesses have “less red tape.” This means you can be more nimble, timely, and responsive.
- You Know Your Audience: As one attendee pointed out, small businesses “know your audience so much more” on a personal level. This allows for direct, meaningful engagement that big brands can’t replicate.
The “How”—Actionable Tactics to Take Back Your Time
The heart of the discussion was about building systems to make content creation easier. Brittany shared several practical tactics.
1. The “Capture Everything” System
To avoid constantly switching tasks and losing great ideas, Brittany’s top tip is to record everything.
- Use AI Note-Takers: She uses tools like Rev.com to automatically join and transcribe her meetings.
- Create a Searchable Goldmine: This provides a full transcript where you can later use Ctrl+F to find a specific quote or idea without disrupting the conversation to take notes. It’s a perfect way to pull client testimonials or key phrases for future content.
2. The “Recycle and Repurpose” Mindset
A core theme was getting more mileage out of the work you’re already doing.
- Start with a Pillar Piece: Brittany thinks of every piece of content as starting with a long-form “pillar” like a blog post, which can then be broken down into dozens of smaller social posts and emails.
- Turn Internal Reports into Case Studies: She shared a recent strategy of turning the performance reports she already creates for clients into public-facing case studies for her website, getting their permission first, of course.
3. Use Social Media to Be Social
Perhaps the most powerful takeaway was a reminder that social media is a tool for conversation, not just a megaphone. One of the best ways to fight burnout, according to Kelley Peterson of Pen and Pug, is to dedicate time to simply engaging with others.
- Build Relationships: Follow and interact with the people and businesses you want to work with.
- Leave Thoughtful Comments: A meaningful comment can do more to keep you top-of-mind than another post of your own. Kelley shared a pro-tip: on Instagram, comments “usually aren’t gathered in the algorithms unless they are at least four words”.
Thank you to Brittany Wren and everyone who attended for such an honest and productive discussion. It was a fantastic reminder of the supportive and knowledgeable marketing community we have here in Lincoln.
