Public Relations Manager – Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

With division administrator and in conjunction with agency leadership, support the commission’s communications efforts to accomplish goals of the agency. Help ensure stakeholders have accurate and reliable information about the mission, goals and objectives of the agency to build public support. 

Examples of Work

Provide high-level strategic planning and direction for public and media relations with a proactive media relations strategy. Develop and maintain relationships with news media outlets. Working with public information officers, integrate timely messages across all venues including NGPC’s website, magazine, social media, news releases and broadcast channels. Work with staff to create and distribute key messages. Collaborate with team in crisis communications incidents for message planning and response. Develop strategies to reach desired public information goals and objectives in support of the agency’s strategic plan. Help streamline internal communications. Collaborate with marketing manager on content marketing planning to ensure all promotions are implemented strategically. Proactively develop new ways of engaging regional outdoor media and key social media influencers. Evaluate social media campaigns and engagement. Ensure agency is utilizing all technologies and digital communications available. Work with other state agencies and partners to facilitate common communications goals and projects. Develop and maintain high-level relationships with partners and agencies that help Nebraska Game and Parks achieve common communications goals. Write, edit, research and/or proofread various publications including the annual report. Streamline communications and key messages amongst all public information officers. Oversee the priorities, schedule and messages of NEBRASKAland Magazine. Actively manage, support and contribute to all agency public information channels, publications, public relations initiatives, and interactive media. Update the agency’s website as needed. Organize media open houses and press conferences as needed. Supervise a team of public information officers. Represent agency at public events as needed. Some occasional weekend work required. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: A four-year degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Public Administration or Marketing and five years’ experience in media and public relations, key message development, managing internal and external communications OR Master’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Public Administration or Marketing and three years’ experience in media and public relations, key message development, managing internal and external communications.

PREFERRED: Master’s Degree; three years management experience and experience with outdoor recreation, conservation and natural resources communications or public relations.

OTHER: Valid driver’s license is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to plan large-scale integrated communications plans ensuring message consistency across all venues. Skilled in managing internal and external channels of communications. Working knowledge of communications campaign planning, implementation and evaluation, and best practices for media and public relations including print, broadcast and web and social media. Ability to manage relationships, communicate effectively, anticipate communication trends and customer needs and adjust communications protocols as needed. Excellent writing and editing skills required. Must have a working knowledge of Word Press and email communications platforms. Ideal candidate will be detail oriented, technology savvy and a team-player with a positive attitude.
