Heartland Bike Share is a 501c3 non-profit organization that exists for the development, promotion, and operation of bike sharing programs throughout the Heartland region for the benefit of the general public, aimed at promoting health and quality of life as well as mitigating climate change and promoting the use of sustainable forms of transportation. Heartland Bike Share currently operates Heartland B-cycle in the Omaha metro area. Heartland Bike Share, along with BCycle, LLC has been contracted to operate bike sharing in the City of Lincoln. The system will have 18 stations and 100 bicycle distributed throughout downtown Lincoln. System launch will take place in Spring 2018.

Job Description

The Lincoln City Manager will be the primary point of contact for the City of Lincoln for issues pertaining to bike sharing in Lincoln. It will be the City Manager’s responsibility to coordinate between all members of the Heartland Bike Share team to ensure successful execution of bike share in Lincoln. In addition to ensuring that marketing, customer service, sponsorship and potential policy changes are handled appropriately, the City Manager will be responsible for providing leadership and motivation to the team on the ground in Lincoln who are responsible for resolving defects and bicycle balancing and distribution as well as station issues. The first task of the City Manager will be to assist the Heartland Bike Share team with efforts to get bike sharing in Lincoln up and running.

Within Heartland Bike Share the Lincoln City Manager will be the person responsible for knowing exactly what is going on in Lincoln. We expect that the hired individual will understand the entire system, what is going well, not going well, and how to improve it at any given time.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about bicycles and their potential as a transportation tool. They will have a broad set of skills and be able to work in a highly dynamic and fluid environment. They will be as comfortable getting their hands dirty in the field as they are presenting to stakeholders in a board room.

Job responsibilities

Below is a sampling of what tasks the employee will be responsible for:


Work with the Marketing and Memberships Coordinator to ensure marketing goals are met
Assist with the execution proper marketing of the bike share system
Staff marketing and membership events as needed


Ensure sponsors are correctly represented on the fleet
Work with sponsors to ensure sponsorship contracts are being honored
Work with the Heartland Bike Share team to prospect, recruit, and retain additional sponsors
Deliver exceptional value to our local sponsors

Community Engagement and PR

Be the public face of bike sharing in Lincoln
Work with community stakeholders in Lincoln
Work with local designated bicycle retailers and advocacy groups
Deliver presentations to government and community organizations

Customer Service
Respond to incoming customer service emails by responding to customers in a timely fashion
Internally route customer issues appropriately
Create new processes to streamline customer service experience
Proactively inform customers of potential issues they may face
Ensure timely fulfillment of new member card requests


Work in conjunction with the Operations Director to achieve operational goals
Ensure stations and bikes are up and running consistently
Ensure adequate bike maintenance & rebalancing resources
Determine optimal balancing levels
Schedule balancing efforts as needed
Demonstrate leadership to ensure system goals are met
Due to the flexible nature of the position many other duties will likely be assigned. Being willing to pitch in and help achieve common goals will be a critical element of this position.


Must have boundless energy and work well with all kinds of people in extremely fluid environments with lots of uncertainty
Must have some experience with business operations: ability to read P&L statements, promotions, development/marketing, etc
Effective communication, leadership, and management skills required
Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Willingness to work irregular hours
Bachelor’s degree, previous bike-share experience is preferred
Basic knowledge of bicycle assembly and repair preferred
